South Korea’s Industrial Strength through the Lens of Intellectual Property — Who Are the Top Patent and Trademark Holders?

Decoding Industrial Competitiveness through Patent and Trademark Registrations

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Invention Day, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) released a report highlighting the companies that lead the nation in patent and trademark ownership. The results vividly illustrate how strategically South Korean firms utilize intellectual property. Samsung Electronics topped the list in patent registrations, while Amorepacific led in trademark registrations—each reflecting overwhelming dominance in their respective sectors.

A Symbol of Technological Innovation — Samsung’s 130,000+ Patents

Samsung Electronics holds an impressive 134,802 patents, accounting for 5% of Korea’s total registered patents (approximately 2.7 million). This robust portfolio underpins Samsung’s global competitiveness in semiconductors, mobile devices, and display technologies. In 2023 alone, the company acquired 5,255 new patents, reaffirming its commitment to R&D as a central pillar of corporate growth.

Among its industry peers, LG Electronics (77,802 patents) and Hyundai Motor Company (54,305 patents) follow suit, yet Samsung’s presence remains unmatched.

Brand Power on Display — Amorepacific’s 16,000+ Trademark Registrations

Meanwhile, Amorepacific, a longstanding leader in cosmetics branding, secured the top spot with 16,514 trademark registrations. Home to flagship brands like Sulwhasoo, HERA, and Laneige, the company’s strategic emphasis on brand protection—both domestically and internationally—is clearly reflected in its trademark activity.

Group companies and competitors such as LG Household & Health Care, CJ, and Lotte also rank high, underscoring how deeply competitive branding is embedded in South Korea’s consumer goods and daily necessities sectors.

Future Outlook for an IP Powerhouse

As of 2023, South Korea leads the world in patent applications relative to GDP and ranks fourth globally in total patent filings (243,310 applications), solidifying its status as a genuine “IP powerhouse.”

KIPO forecasts that the number of registered patents and trademarks will each surpass 3 million by 2027 and 2029, respectively. This projection supports a growing economic model driven by intellectual property-based development.

The Story Behind the Numbers

This survey goes beyond a mere “numbers game.” It sheds light on how Korean companies have built their global stature and sustained their technological and brand leadership. The proactive IP strategies of Samsung and Amorepacific serve as prime examples of the value of intellectual property.

As economic uncertainties grow, all eyes will be on how South Korean companies continue to leverage IP for sustainable growth in the years ahead.
