Larian Studios Announces New Divinity — What This New Title, Born in an Age Where “Surprises Get Leaked,” Reveals

Larian Studios has announced a new Divinity at The Game Awards 2025. As the first completely new entry in the series since Divinity: Original Sin II, the reveal thrilled many fans. At the same time, however, the announcement came with a unique backdrop: some fans had already anticipated the existence of the new title even before the event.

The reason was that trademark information had appeared in EUIPO’s online database, “eSearch plus.” The new Divinity logo and distinctive symbols had been published there, and some fans had already pointed out their connection to a mysterious object that Geoff Keighley had posted on X ahead of The Game Awards. As a result, the “perfect surprise reveal” had already begun to unravel. Yet Larian Studios chose to turn the situation to its advantage. After the announcement, the studio changed its official account’s header image to a screenshot of “eSearch plus,” intentionally making light of the fact that publicly available information had spoiled the secret.

This response seems emblematic of the circumstances surrounding the modern game industry. There was a time when creators could fully control the flow of information and orchestrate surprises. Today, however, trademark databases, the automatic publication of certification records, and the rapid spread of information through social media make such “unintentional exposure” all but unavoidable. Larian Studios’ reaction serves as a good example of embracing the challenges of information management in this era of heightened transparency—with a sense of humor.

It is also notable that the new title is simply called Divinity, without a number. Just before the event, Publishing Director Michael Douse had stated clearly that there were no plans for Divinity: Original Sin 3, and indeed, what was presented was not a “numbered sequel” but a “new starting point” for the series. It deserves attention as an approach that inherits the brand while signaling a direction not bound by the existing series.

Furthermore, the reveal presentation at The Game Awards strongly highlighted the series’ dark-fantasy elements. Shocking imagery of villagers transformed into a massive statue through a ritual, along with the connection to the mysterious object called “the Hellstone,” suggests that this new work aims for an even more grand and weighty worldbuilding than before.

Larian Studios achieved global acclaim with Baldur’s Gate 3, yet the studio has declared that this new title aims to surpass even that by becoming its “largest game ever.” With three decades of development experience and accumulated technical expertise, expectations for how these strengths will be brought to fruition in a new form are exceptionally high.

Although the reveal did not remain a complete surprise, the announcement of Divinity stands as a symbolic moment unique to our era, in which game culture and the information society intersect. Further updates are eagerly awaited.
